Los Angeles is a city of neighborhoods, but some places feel a little more hidden than others.

Drive into Los Feliz Estates and the pace begins to change.

The streets become quieter. The homes sit into the hillsides. Mature landscaping replaces the feeling of a busy commercial corridor. And as you move higher into the neighborhood, views of Los Angeles begin to open up below you.

Nestled beneath Griffith Park, Los Feliz Estates is one of the area's most distinctive residential communities—and one of my favorite places to simply drive through and take in the architecture. It's a neighborhood that makes you dream a little.

Where Is Los Feliz Estates?

Los Feliz Estates is a hillside residential area within the broader Los Feliz community of Los Angeles, positioned near the southern edge of Griffith Park.

Its location gives residents something that's relatively unusual in Los Angeles: a residential setting that feels tucked away while still being close to the city.

You're near the energy of Los Feliz, Hollywood, Silver Lake, and central Los Angeles, but once you're inside the Estates, the atmosphere can feel considerably more removed from the surrounding city. That contrast is part of the appeal.

You can be close to everything without necessarily feeling like you're in the middle of everything.

A Neighborhood Shaped by the Hills

The topography is one of the first things you'll notice.

Los Feliz Estates isn't a flat neighborhood laid out on a simple street grid. Roads curve through the hills, homes follow the terrain, and elevation becomes part of the experience.

That creates a very different visual character from many of Los Angeles' traditional residential neighborhoods.

Instead of long, straight streets lined with similar lots, you'll find winding roads, hillside homes, mature landscaping, and changing views as you move through the neighborhood.
